About Wanaka

About Wanaka

Wanaka is a small but developing alpine and farming town of 5037 residents (2006 Census) on the south-eastern shores of Lake Wanaka, the source of the mighty Clutha River. It is a popular summer and winter holiday destination with four skifields nearby. Trout fishing, mountainbiking and the arts are year-round obsessions. Wanaka is the central hub of the Upper Clutha district (pop 7002) that includes villages at Lake Hawea, Cardrona and Makarora. The isolated Matukituki Valley is the gateway to the Mt Aspiring National Park, a popular tramping and climbing destination.
