New Zealand are through to the final of the world softball
championships in Canada -- where they will defend their title
against Australia, the only side to beat them in the
tournament.
The Black Sox earned an opportunity to avenge a 7-0 loss to
Australia on Saturday by fighting back from a 2-4 deficit to
eliminate Canada 8-5 in today's semifinal.
A six-run burst in the fifth innings shifted the momentum New
Zealand's way at Saskatoon, as the Black Sox built a decisive
8-4 advantage.
Nathan Nukunuku and Jarrad Martin slammed homers with runners
on base to give New Zealand the upper hand.
Canada pulled a run back in the penultimate innings but
experienced New Zealand pitcher Marty Grant prevented any
further damage.
Australia progressed to their first world championship
decider yesterday when beating Canada 2-0 while seven-time
finalists New Zealand are seeking their fourth consecutive
crown.
The final is under way after rain delayed the schedule
earlier today.
