Australia stormed to their first world championship title in
Canada today, ending New Zealand's three-year-reign with a
5-0 victory in the finale in Saskatoon.
Australia, appearing in their maiden world title decider,
continued their domination of the Black Sox, following up a
crushing 7-0 victory in post-section play on Saturday with
another compelling display.
Australia's success ended the Black Sox' hopes of winning
their fourth consecutive crown.
New Zealand's first loss to the Australians condemned them to
a tougher match schedule though they progressed to their
seventh final by beating Japan, the United States and finally
hosts Canada in sudden-death matches.
The Black Sox were handed a final day double header, shading
the Canadians 8-5 in a rain-delayed bronze medal match this
morning before a short turnaround against the well-rested
Australians.
