An investigation has begun into a house fire in South Otago where a body has been found.

Emergency services were called to the house in Milton after the fire was reported just before 4am today, police said.

Police have confirmed that a body was located in the Union St home on State Highway 1.

The Otago Daily Times understands the deceased was a Milton man, aged in his late 50s.

However, police would not release the person's name until they had been formally identified or comment over whether the fire was suspicious.

A spokesperson for the Fire Service said the house was well alight when crews arrived, but the blaze had since been put out.

Two crews from Milton were sent, along with two from Balclutha.

A fire investigator and detectives were at the scene and a cordon remained in place.
