Polytechnic enrolments higher than expected

Otago Polytechnic continues to beat its own expectations on student numbers, with more than 3700 enrolled by the end of March.

A report tabled at the latest polytechnic council meeting showed 3726 equivalent full-time students (Efts) were enrolled at the end of March, exceeding the expectation of 3504.6 Efts by 6.3%.

The report also showed the polytechnic's operating surplus, for the year to the end of March, of $2.157 million was $1.027 million larger than expected, largely due to ''timing issues''.

A separate report tabled at the meeting showed changing to a woodchip-fuelled boiler resulted in a significant decrease in Otago Polytechnic's carbon footprint last year.

Air travel, electricity and heating were the largest contributors to the polytechnic's carbon emissions, which dropped from 2475.5 tonnes in 2012 to 2027 tonnes last year.

The decrease largely came about as a result of switching to woodchips to fuel the boiler.

Sustainability director Jean Tilleyshort said it was ''particularly pleasing'' carbon emissions from electricity usage, general waste and air travel had also decreased.

In a separate development, Ms Tilleyshort said the polytechnic was close to getting fair trade accreditation.
