Otago Polytechnic is looking to aggressively expand its Cromwell campus, which it has rebranded ''Central''.

Campus manager Jean Tilleyshort said the expansion included offering new study programmes, including a certificate in bicycle mechanics and diplomas in business and outdoor leadership.

The campus had also launched qualifications in high country farming this year.

''Central Otago is growing, and we want the community to know it can turn to us for the qualifications that will support our local industries and opportunities.

''We will now be known as Central,'' Ms Tilleyshort said.

Ms Tilleyshort's comments come after a report on progress at the polytechnic's Central Otago campus said it aimed to increase student numbers from 200 equivalent-fulltime students to 300 by February 2016.

It also aimed to improve the ''financial viability'' of the campus by increasing the size of class groups.

Other goals included offering short courses which combined learning and tourism and increasing the number higher-level programmes it offered.
