Otago Polytechnic architecture, building and engineering students have been hard at work on the polytechnic's charity house.

The four-bedroom, 120sq m home will be auctioned today. Proceeds will go to non-profit United Way NZ, which will give the funds to local charities.

The students built the house as part of their course, carpentry lecturer Graham Burgess said.

''Years ago, more than half the students would start the programme having some building skills ... but in today's world you'd be lucky if 20% of them have actually had any building experience at all.

"We've had retired bank managers, former freezing workers, accountants and school leavers all doing the course for various reasons, and they all say the best part is building the house.''

The house will be auctioned off at noon today at 100 Anzac Ave, L Block of the Otago Polytechnic.
