University of Otago chemistry graduate Anthea Blackburn has gained a leading scholarship to support research which could pave the way for a better-targeted form of chemotherapy.
The year-long Fulbright-Ministry of Research, Science and Technology graduate award will enable her to undertake doctoral study at Northwestern University in Illinois, in the US.
The scholarship provides Miss Blackburn (23) with $US25,000, travel costs and insurance, in a package believed to be worth about $NZ50,000.
Her research will focus on nanotechnology, and the further development of metal-organic frameworks.
These porous three-dimensional structures can store and release gases and medicinal drugs, and could prove useful for cancer treatment.
After her Fulbright year, a scholarship from Northwestern will fund more US study.
