University of Otago physical education researcher Dr Jim
Cotter has been honoured by Otago students as an "outstanding
supervisor".
Dr Cotter, a senior lecturer who joined the university staff
in 2001, was last week named the Otago University Students
Association's overall supervisor of the year, in recognition
of his work with postgraduate students.
The award was "very humbling", he said in an interview.
Postgraduate students were positive, enthusiastic and capable
and he learned a great deal from working with them.
Dr Cotter advises on Sparc's High Performance Programme, and
has served on the executive board of Sport and Exercise
Science NZ since 2005.
Award organisers said in the latest annual OUSA supervisor
awards 120 postgraduate students had nominated 74
supervisors, and a student committee had selected the top 10
after considering the nomination information and further
comments by other students.
Zoologist Dr Shinichi Nakagawa was named the new supervisor
of the year, with students praising him as a devoted and
inspirational supervisor.
Research supervisor awards winners were: Dr Aladin Bekhit,
food science; Dr Rachel Brown, human nutrition; Prof John
Dawson, law; Associate Prof Jamin Halberstadt, psychology;
Prof Rob Lawson, marketing; Prof Thomas Rades, pharmacy; Dr
Chris Rudd, politics; Associate Prof Louise Signal, public
