Peter Murnane
Political activist Fr Peter Murnane will visit Dunedin on
Thursday.
The Dominican friar and two companions deflated the 30m-high
protective dome on the Waihopai spy base near Blenheim with
sickles in 2008, maintaining the base supplied information to
the United States National Security Agency and their action
was necessary to prevent its contribution to torture and war.
They were acquitted of burglary and wilful damage charges in
March this year but are being sued by the Crown to recover
more than $1.2 million the Crown says it spent to repair the
damaged dome.
Fr Murnane, of Auckland, will participate in another of the
"public conversation" series hosted by the University of
Otago Centre for Theology and Public Issues and its National
Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies.
The event, hosted by Associate Prof Murray Rae, will be held
at St Margaret's College, Leith St, at 5pm.
