Meeting the neighbours at a Scarfie Card event on Castle
St, Dunedin, yesterday are (from left) Rose Frendin (20), Trish
Meget (80), resident of 28 years, Lorraine Bruce (79), resident
for 17 years, Henri Purvis (20), and Sarah McCrostie (19).
The event was designed to introduce Scarfie Card supporters,
students and other Castle St residents.
The card scheme offers students rewards for voluntary work,
and introduces them to activities in and around Dunedin via a
deck of playing cards, allowing them to connect with their
community in a positive manner.
Card creator Aaron Thompson said it was in a 10-week pilot
stage and was introduced to every student on Castle St this
week, as well as Aquinas and City colleges.
Dunedin residents can sign up to get students to carry out
odd jobs for them.
In return, students earn points to gain rewards.
About 50 tasks had been registered on the card's website and
more than 100 students had signed on.
"It's going really well," Mr Thompson said.
After the pilot, the scheme would be reviewed and he hoped
the University of Otago would be interested in funding it
fully for all of its students.
