The value of the University' of Otago's bachelor of medical science honours programme in the university's overall health science education has been emphasised by health sciences pro-vice-chancellor Prof Peter Crampton.

The programme reflected the importance of research in science, as part of medical education, Prof Crampton said, at a BMedSc (Hons) student awards function at the university's Hunter Centre last week.

The university also greatly appreciated the commitment of its "numerous benefactors" in supporting the student awards, he said.

The awards and scholarships will support a series of year-long research projects covering many topics, ranging from health governance and the country's district health boards, to the anatomy of hamstring muscles and aspects of end of life decisions.

One of the students, Christopher Bloomer, said the $5000 scholarship he had received was a "fantastic" form of support from the university.
