University of Otago students have won the President's Trophy
for the best overall performance in national law student
competitions, making it three in a row.
Otago won three of the five knockout contest finals at the
recent New Zealand Law Students' Association (NZLSA)
competitions in Hamilton.
Winning the trophy for the third consecutive year adds
further gloss to a stellar year for Otago law student teams
after they achieved the best overall university result at
annual competitions in Sydney, Australia, in July.
This was also the best overall outcome for Otago students in
19 years of participating in the Australian event.
New Zealand has six law schools and Australian schools took
part in the NZLSA event for the first time this year.
Otago's Rob Clarke and Alex Boock won the client-interviewing
contest, having earlier won the Australian event; Josh and
Tom English topped the negotiation competition; and Tiho
Mijatov and Hannah Drury won the junior mooting.
Kate Lawson-Bradshaw was third in the witness examination
contest.
Otago law faculty dean Prof Mark Henaghan said the latest
success reflected well on the Otago students and the quality
of their legal education. The students worked hard, were
strongly backed by their teachers, and also supported each
other well, he said.
