The University of Otago's first-year students are to make the
most of their new home, with respect and goodwill in mind,
faculty and city seniors say.
Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull and University of Otago
Vice-Chancellor Prof Harlene Hayne addressed hundreds of
first-years at an Orientation event at the Forsyth Barr
Stadiumyesterday.
Mr Cull said students came to Dunedin as citizens, not
tourists or visitors. As such, they should treat the city and
surrounds with respect, he said.
"Anyone who thinks they can treat Dunedin like a sailor on
leave in a foreign port might want to reconsider if they're
in the right place." About 80% of first-year students move to
Dunedin from outside Otago.
Students make up about 15% of Dunedin's population. Mr Cull
said they brought vibrancy, youth spirit and energy, and in
the 143 years since Otago University was established a "most
enriching" relationship had evolved between Dunedin and its
students.
The university and city would get into their blood, he said.
"Step out from beyond the campus. There's so much to explore
and take advantage of." He wished them a "fantastic time" but
told them to take care of themselves and each other.
"Dunedin students tend to have a risky relationship with
alcohol. It's not restricted to young people and it's not
restricted to Dunedin, but we do have it." Mr Cull ended his
welcome by telling students they had a lot to gain in Otago
but also a lot to lose.
Prof Hayne then addressed the first-years on theirprivileges
and obligations both on and off campus.
She said students did not know how lucky they were and
promised them they would not be disappointed.
They were obliged to be the best students, people and
citizens they could be.
"Our goal is to push you harder than you've ever been pushed
before and your obligation is to work harder than ever
before," Prof Hayne said.
She also reiterated the importance of respecting Dunedin and
its residents.
"You shouldn't do anything here that you wouldn't feel
comfortable doing on your own doorstep."
