Each year more than 200 University of Otago students opt to spend a semester or two studying overseas, and for those interested in the venture, the faculty hosts an exchange information week on campus.

This year's exchange week began with a fair, comprising stalls about the international universities able to be incorporated into Otago programmes.

Students from abroad, on exchange at the University of Otago, were on hand to give advice to others considering a temporary change of scene.

Celia Corteletti, of the university's international office, said institutions in Europe, Canada and the United States were most popular among Otago students.

This year, about 260 students had enrolled in an international exchange programme through the university and would complete part of their studies in a foreign country, she said.

The university offers more than 90 exchange programmes in more than 30 countries.

Seminars about various destinations and programmes are being held this week on campus.

Mrs Corteletti said credits gained overseas counted towards University of Otago degrees, and were covered by university of origin fees. Most programmes were compatible with exchanges, but were not available for some, including medical students.
