An incident in which glass shattered on to a footpath outside
the University of Otago in December was not caused by ''glass
impurities'', an investigation by the university has found.
The investigation found that a sheet of glass on the roof of
a walkway probably shattered on to the Cumberland St footpath
due to friction between the glass and a stainless steel bolt,
university director of property services Barry MacKay said.
''The university is currently considering options for
replacing this panel and the other glass panels that were
removed from this walkway as a safety precaution,'' Mr MacKay
said.
The incident in the week before Christmas came as the
university was carrying out a wider investigation after
earlier problems with spontaneously shattering glass. Mr
MacKay said this ''separate'' investigation by property
services was still under way.
