Otago University Students' Association magazine Critic
has won the best publication award for the second year in a
row at the 2013 New Zealand Student Media Awards in
The magazine also scooped awards for best design, cover,
reviewer and columnist, and shared the best sports writer
award with Salient magazine (Victoria University of
Wellington Students' Association), which also received six
first placings across all categories.
The overall award for best publication went to Critic,
followed by runners-up Salient and Massive
magazine (Massey University Association).
The judges paid tribute to the way the dedicated production
of the magazines achieved excellence, bringing colour to
topics that could be otherwise ''dull and desiccated'', as
well as an often highly refined visual integrity to a
''tsunami'' of content.
They singled out Critic for making an impressive
contribution to student life under the editorship of Sam
Yesterday, Mr McChesney said he was delighted with the award,
given the year the magazine had had.
''It's been an interesting year.
''We're really, really stoked.''
