Honorary doctorate for Justice French

University of Otago law graduate Justice Christine French, a judge at the New Zealand Court of Appeal, will receive an Otago honorary doctor of laws degree today.

Justice French gained an Otago LLB with honours in 1981, and became the first female Otago law graduate to be appointed to the New Zealand Court of Appeal, in 2012.

She was previously the first South Island woman to be appointed to the High Court.

Otago vice-chancellor Prof Harlene Hayne said Justice French was a graduate who had ''excelled academically and professionally while also sharing her time and skills to enhance the life of her community''.
