'Huge relief' as Otago students post first win

A quarter of a century since the last time they last took part in a televised University Challenge quiz event, University of Otago students are back in action, and are still winning.

Otago University Students Association president-elect Paul Hunt yesterday said the Otago team had begun with a win, over a Waikato University team, in the first encounter in the revived TV quiz series, screened on Saturday.

''It was a face-off of champions - Waikato University's team won during the last episode of the show back in 1989,'' Mr Hunt said.

Otago University students had ''won the most times overall''- six - during the show's previous 14 years on the air.

''We're proud to see that Otago's team came back swinging,'' he said.

This year's competition has been split into 31 episodes, which will be aired each Saturday at 11.30am on Prime.

The Otago team consists of Naomi Woods, Matthew Ordish, Tim Foster, Dylan Gaffney and Francesca Allen.

Miss Allen (24) said having a win in Otago's first quiz encounter this year had been ''a huge relief'', because Otago team members had been well aware of their university's history in the event and had felt ''a lot of weight'' on their shoulders.
