The University of Otago will soon mark the 50th anniversary of its annual Foreign Policy School by focusing on New Zealand's place in the world.

The school will be held at St Margaret's College, from June 26 to 28.

Titled ''New Zealand and the World: Past, Present and Future'', it will feature a line-up of nearly 30 national and overseas speakers who will debate key issues in New Zealand's international affairs.

They include security analyst Dr Paul Buchanan, former senior New Zealand diplomats Colin Keating and Terence O'Brien, Auckland University professors Jane Kelsey and Ranginui Walker, and investigative journalist Jon Stephenson.

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully will give the opening talk. School co-director Prof Robert Patman said that, from modest beginnings, the school had built a strong reputation and had become ''the marquee event in the country's international affairs calendar'', being opened each year with an address by the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
