Palmers have done particularly well this year when it comes to the University of Otago's Carl Smith Medal and Rowheath Trust Award.

Associate Prof Jessica Palmer, of the Otago Faculty of Law, and Associate Prof Suetonia Palmer, a kidney specialist at the university's Christchurch campus, are co recipients of the award and medal, which recognise outstanding research by early career staff.

The recipients also receive a $5000 grant for scholarly development.

Prof Jessica Palmer, who is not related to her Christchurch namesake, said the award was a ''great encouragement''. She felt ''very fortunate'' to have gained this recognition and would use the money to travel overseas to further relationships with academics working in the same fields of law.

She is a former recipient of the Law Foundation's Ethel Benjamin Scholarship, and is a graduate of Auckland and Cambridge universities.

Otago deputy vice chancellor Prof Richard Blaikie said research by the two recipients was world class and they were outstanding examples of the translational research being undertaken at Otago.

Prof Suetonia Palmer's research involves evaluating the effectiveness of medicines. Prof Palmer, of the department of medicine, applies meta analysis - the mathematics of combining research studies together - to study the evidence behind treatments used for people with kidney disease.

A Rutherford Discovery Fellow, she has an MBChB and a PhD from Otago, and has also gained a L'Oreal Unesco For Women in Science Fellowship, and, in 2013, received the university's early career award for distinction in research.
