Fortune production leads awards

The Fortune Theatre production The Pitmen Painters, was the big winner at the inaugural Dunedin Theatre Awards last night.

The Pitmen Painters, claimed four of the seven awards - production of the year, best director, best male performance and best scenographic design.

The only prize not won by the Fortune was best Dunedin script, which was awarded to Harry Love for All's Well that Ends, at the Globe Theatre.

John Glass and Anna Henare won the best male and female performance awards, for The Pitmen Painters and Wuthering Heights, respectively.

Fortune Theatre head of design Peter King was awarded both design prizes, winning best scenographic design for The Pitmen Painters and best technical design for Wuthering Heights.

Best director went to awards organiser Patrick Davies for The Pitmen Painters.

The outstanding contribution to Dunedin theatre award was presented to outgoing Otago Festival of the Arts founding director Nicholas McBryde, for his work in establishing the Otago festival, which was "a world class event, bringing international and national works of art to Otago," the judges said.

The awards were presented by Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull at the Fortune Theatre.

The winners are:

Technical design: Peter King Wuthering Heights (Fortune Theatre).

Scenographic design: Peter King The Pitmen Painters (Fortune Theatre).

Dunedin script: Harry Love All's Well that Ends (Globe Theatre).

Production of the year: The Pitmen Painters (Fortune Theatre).

Male performance: John Glass The Pitmen Painters (Fortune Theatre).

Female performance: Anna Henare Wuthering Heights (Fortune Theatre).

Director: Patrick Davies The Pitmen Painters (Fortune Theatre).

Outstanding contribution to Dunedin theatre: Nicholas McBryde.

Wild card awards: Interim Fortune Theatre manager Karen Elliot, Dunedin theatre stalwart Janice Cheng and Anti-Social Tap founders Kathryn Hurst and Vicki Cross.
