A look at what's happening in the world of art.
Oamaru spot for artists
The work of a couple of Dunedin artists is on show at
Oamaru's Forrester Gallery, in the exhibitions "8 Years - 8
Works" by Marcus Wainwright and "Still Lives" by Sue
Marshall.
Wainwright's exhibition shows the progress of the artist as
he pursues the art of figurative carving and sculpture. Among
the ancient tales remembered in his monumental works is the
biblical story of Judith.
Sue Marshall's "Still Lives" celebrates the lives of two
small and insignificant birds that died within hours of each
other. The realist images capture the birds' feathers, beaks
and claws, and even the dust mites that live on their bodies.
Fine art on show
The Wanaka Fine Art Gallery, upstairs on the corner of
Ardmore and Helwick streets, is giving new life to a familiar
art space.
The gallery overlooking the lake has an exhibition of work on
paper and canvas by Geoff Williams, Craig Primrose, Ben Ho
and Peter Hackett.
Trevor Askin's bronze sculptures and Murano glass are also on
show.
Another dimension
Auckland-based artist and sometime social commentator Andy
Leleisi'uao brings his imaginary cryptid creatures to the
Blue Oyster Project Art Space. The artist usually works with
paintings but for this exhibition, opening on Tuesday, he
will be rendering some of the exhibition's cryptids as
sculptures.
An accompanying exhibition, Colleen Altagracia's "The
Fullness of Empty Pockets", also occupies 3-D space. In her
case, works are created by filling the empty pockets of the
title with casting foam. Some of those pockets were being
worn at the time.
A DVD accompanies the exhibition.
