New theatre group plans to 'give something back'

A new Dunedin theatre company has taken the stage.

Stageworks Theatre Society Otago Inc has been formed by a group of experienced actors to encourage participation in local theatre.

"'We are old, but we are new' is the way we describe ourselves," Stageworks president Bert Nisbet said.

"The idea came from a group of actors who had worked together on a number of productions. One of our core objectives is to give something back. We are completely self-funded, with no support from any arts body or corporate sponsor.

"This keeps us very lean and mean. We beg and borrow."

Stageworks will present The Mysterious Mr Love at the Playhouse from August 6 to 13, with profits being donated to The Sophie Elliott Foundation.

Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap will be produced in September.

"This will be the first time it has been produced in New Zealand for 50 years and is a coup for Stageworks, as the rights have been carefully guarded for all this time," Mr Nisbet said.

Stageworks also plans to produce Bullshot Crummond at the Mayfair Theatre in December.
