Society's annual exhibition opens

Kaleidoscope of colourful and eclectic artworks marked the opening of the Otago Art Society's annual exhibition.

The 138th exhibition, which opened last week, featured a diverse range of oils, acrylics, paper works, pottery and sculpture.

First prize was awarded to Dunedin artist Judy Smith, for her acrylic painting Emma, which was ''well executed and [had] good composition'', the judges said.

''This work shows the painter's growing confidence and handling of colour, ensuring her own unique style of portraiture.''

The judges were The Artist's Room gallery owner Michelle Chalklin-Sinclair and Cath Garrett, from The Framer's Room.

The art society will also host a series of lunchtime talks, ''Word Pictures'' this month, in conjunction with the exhibition, which runs until June 29.

The free hour-long talks will be held from noon on Wednesdays at the Art Station and feature Dunedin heritage building restorer Lawrie Forbes on June 18 and Otago University Press publisher Rachel Scott on June 25.

Awards were. -Mollie and John Pledger Award: Allan McMorran, From St Martins Island.

Roy Dickison Trophy, Heart of the South Award: Jude Ansbacher, Port Chalmers.

Gaye Rowcroft Open Section Awards: Judy Smith, Emma, 1; Danny Moorwood, Copper Blue Bottle, 2; Gillian Pope, Hoopers Inlet and Mount Charles, 3.

Merits were awarded to Anne Baldock, Nic Dempster, Pav Pawlowicz, Geoff Williams and Jenny Longstaff.
