Short story collection ticks all boxes

Short story collections are tricky, as each tale must capture the imagination, an even standard has to be maintained and the numerous characters need some individuality.

Cathy Kelly's Christmas Magic passes those tests, starting with the title story and continuing the appeal through all 19 stories, each of which has some Christmas connection. Some have a bit of a bite - notably The Angel Gabrielle and May You Live in Interesting Times - while Lizzie's Fling and Letter From Chicago have lessons for all who big-note themselves.

The Trouble With Mother is a reminder that you're never too old for fun and romance, despite what your children think, but the pick of the bunch is Madame Lucia, an intriguing story about a fortuneteller. A lovely collection, ideal as a Christmas gift, which doubtless explains the title.
