Howard Egan (77) writes about his trophy-shooting highlights in New Zealand, Africa and North America.

A little like his beloved fallow deer, this book bounces around a bit as he chops from recounting adventures to editorialising on ethics, telling other people's hunting stories, presenting scientific data and an extensive section on fallow deer.

One hunting story is even ''told'' by a deer, ''dictated'' to the author.

Of interest to Otago hunters will be his advice on prime hunting blocks in the Blue Mountains; while the author did his shooting there some years ago, these territorial fallow deer will probably still favour the same areas.

- Stephen Jaquiery is ODT illustrations editor and a keen hunter.
