Retaining interest a challenge

This continues the series started with The Long Earth and The Long War.

I read the first but hadn't bothered with the second, being disappointed with the writing style adopted by the authors, no doubt felt necessary when dealing with a ''serious'' work of science fiction rather than Pratchett's hugely enjoyable Discworld books.

On Datum Earth there has been a catastrophic volcanic eruption at Yellowstone, the ash fallout from which has caused countries to become uninhabitable.

Populations are concentrated around the world's mid-regions and millions have relocated by ''stepping'' to other worlds.

In their own ways, Joshua Valiente and Sally Linsay have been assisting where they can, with Lobsang always in the background overseeing events.

There are subplots, but I found it was a step too far to retain interest.
