The main narrator, the girl on the train, is Rachel, drunk most of the time and with an unreliable memory. Rachel is fired from her London job for boozing but continues commuting because she has little better to do. She's neurotic, obsessive and can't get over her ex, Tom, who lives with his new wife Anna in the house previously occupied by Rachel and Tom. Anna is also a narrator of the story.
The third narrator, Megan, lives in the same street next to the railway and midway through the story goes missing. Rachel sees Megan most days from the train and fantasises her as Jess partnered with Jason (real name Scott). Confused? You will be if you read the book, but in an intriguing way. The story is quite suspenseful, if disorganised.
