Remembering the fallen

A detail from the war memorial window in St Andrew's Church, Cambridge (pictured), is included in To the Memory: New Zealand's War Memorials by historian Jock Phillips (Potton & Burton).

Phillips has recorded the stories behind the country's some 1000 memorials to the fallen in various conflicts.

These range from granite obelisks and fountains, to statues and sculptures of soldiers, to gates and archways, crosses, plaques and intricate stained-glass windows, from the country's big cities and smaller towns.

Memorials from Dunedin, Oamaru, Palmerston, Wyndham and elsewhere in the South are featured.

It is clear a wealth of research has gone into the book, which is supported by comprehensive endnotes, index and suggestions for additional reading.
