Michael Sheen will make his directorial debut on 'Green River Killer'.

The 47-year-old has already penned the script - an adaptation based on Jeff Jensen's graphic novel 'Green River Killer: A True Detective Story' - for the movie and will also play the lead role of serial killer Gary Ridgway.

Sheen, who starred in 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' told Variety: "This is a dark story but one that ultimately finds hope and meaning in that darkness. The story of Tom and Gary, and how they are bound together in time, pulled me in from the beginning and wouldn't let go. I hope that by now bringing it to life on screen, it can make audiences feel the same way."

In 2003, Ridgway pleaded guilty to 48 charges of first degree murder during the 80s and 90s, where he primarily targeted women.

He co-operated with the courts by helping to locate the victims to escape the death penalty.

The Eisner-award winning novel is based on Jensen's father Tom - who was the detective in charge of the case and who successfully tracked him down using DNA technology.

Jensen spent 180 days interviewing Ridgway to discover his secrets.

Sheen is expected to announce more castings over the summer as filming is due to start this year.

Until then, fans can catch Sheen in sci-fi drama 'Passengers', which hits UK cinemas on December 23.

He is also due to return to the small screen in 'Masters Of Sex' in September.
