For the players

It is just 17 days till the PlayStation 4 is released in New Zealand. Hayden Meikle fires some questions at PlayStation's New Zealand head, Dave Hine.

What have you got planned for the launch of the PS4?

The launch of a next-generation game console is incredibly exciting for the industry, the fans and all of us here at PlayStation.

All the news announcements, the feature reveals, the new games, the chatter, the hype.

There's a buzz about that just builds to a point where even those who aren't gamers know that there is something special happening.

A new platform launch is almost a once-in-a-decade event and our launch campaign will celebrate this - it's for the players.

The PS3 is still going strong. Will it be difficult to convince people to upgrade?

The PS3 is ideal for the family or a player new to console games.

It is still a force to be reckoned with and will continue to be so for a few years yet.

PlayStation 4, on the other hand, is where a player can immerse themselves into a whole new world of gaming entertainment.

At this point in the lifecycle, the PS3 consumer and PS4 consumer have different entertainment needs.

I think that the community and media reaction along with the pre-orders to date show that players are responding very well to what PS4 offers.

What do you see as the main selling points of the PS4?

The PlayStation 4 is the world's most powerful gaming console and will deliver a gaming and entertainment experience like never before.

The PS4 has a level of social and community engagement that is very exciting.

At the click of a button on the Dualshock 4 controller, you will be able to share your greatest gaming feats, be it images or movie clips, to friends all over the world.

We know that people have multiple screens and we are integrating smart phones and tablets into the PS4 gaming experience.

Using remote play, you will even be able to take the PS4 games with you on PS Vita.

And on top of all of that we have the best gaming line-up for a PlayStation console launch.

There are more than 180 games in development for PS4 with over 20 exclusives announced to date.

What are the big games people are going to want to get straight away?

We have an incredible line-up of games at launch.

Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack (made by PS4 system architect Mark Cerny), Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (with 60 minutes of gameplay exclusive to PlayStation), Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield, Fifa 14 ... the list goes on.

Obviously there is another big new console releasing about the same time. You confident the PS4 will win the war?

When we set out to develop the PS4, we wanted to put the player at the centre of that process.

We spoke with gamers to find out what they wanted in a game console and we asked game developers what they needed to develop truly inspiring next-gen games.

So far we have delivered on that approach and the response has been amazing.

We've started as we mean to go on.

I'm confident New Zealand will remain a PlayStation nation.
