Obviously, what gamers want for Christmas is a shiny new PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. But if Santa is not quite that generous, check out these recommendations for stocking-fillers from Simon Bishop and Hayden Meikle.

For the kids
Ratchet and Clank: Into The Nexus

The latest in the long-running, beloved Sony franchise.

After the not so well received QForce game, it's a return to what made the game great in the first place.

A proper story, inventive and upgradeable weaponry, mixed in with the series' trademark humour makes Nexus worth a look.

It's hard to recapture the magic of the first games in the series, but Nexus is a definite step in the right direction.

For driving fans
Need for Speed Rivals

Another new instalment in a long-running franchise.

After a few attempts at a simulator, Need For Speed has firmly gone back down the arcade route.

Playing as either racers on the run from the cops, or cops trying to take down the racers, it's a thrill-a-minute ride.

Multiplayer with friends is where the game's strength lies, but it's still a ton of fun in single player.

For hand-held gamers
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

This Nintendo 3DS exclusive is a direct sequel to the SNES classic A Link To The Past.

With a top-down perspective, it might be seen as a little bit old school, but the tale of Link battling various evil forces is charming and absorbing.

Simple yet addictive gameplay includes some innovative use of magic and weaponry.

For wrestling fans
WWE 2K14

Yet another pro wrestling game - seems like there have been dozens in recent years - but this one is interesting because it is the first since the WWE brand switched to 2K Sports.

The major mode is called 30 Years of Wrestlemania, and recreates classic match-ups from the great event.

All the other significant wrestling stoushes (cage, TLC, tag team) are available, along with a bulging roster of current and former superstars.

For the new generation
Zoo Tycoon

A much-loved franchise from the world of PC gaming is now a launch title for Xbox One.

The premise of the game is to create, manage and control your own zoo.

You choose every element of the layout and animals within your zoo, and is somewhat similar to the popular SimCity.

With an emphasis on learning about animals, and conservation of species, it's a great choice for kids or for players who aren't too keen on shooters.
