The Billboard Awards, to be held in Las Vegas on May 18, are one of music's top awards ceremonies and are based on fan interactions with music, including album and digital singles sales, radio airplay, touring, streaming and social interactions on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, VEVO, Spotify and other online destinations.
Lorde broke through in the US in 2013 with her number one Billboard Hot 100 single Royals and debut album Pure Heroine.
The teenager will compete with Beyonce, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry and Rihanna for top female artist and Royals is up for top radio, digital, streaming and rock song.
Lorde's other categories include new artist, top rock artist, top rock album, top Hot 100 artist, top digital songs artist, top radio songs artist and top Hot 100 song.
Following Lorde and Imagine Dragon's 12 nominations are Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis with 11, 10 and eight respectively.
