Netflix to launch in NZ

Netflix will launch in New Zealand next March, the online movie and television service has confirmed.

The company, in a statement on its website, said the service will be available on smart TVs, tablets, smartphones, computers, consoles and set-top boxes.

There are no details yet on pricing, but US customers are charged around $10 a month for the service, which hosts a vast catalogue of content.

Netflix, which will also launch across the Tasman next March, has around 53 million customers globally.

New Zealand internet users have already been able to access the service via back-door channels.

Internet companies Slingshot and Orcon have also given their customers access to the site and similar overseas media outlets since earlier this year.

Sky TV boss John Fellet said it was difficult to comment on how the Netflix launch would impact its own online service, Neon, which goes live next month.

That would remain the case until Netflix announces the catalogue it will make available in this country and what it will charge New Zealanders, he said.

Fellet did say that the on-demand video market was getting crowded in New Zealand and that a mix of price, content, and a service's ease-of-use would determine who wins it.
