He was last here with his reformed indie-rock darlings Pavement, but Stephen Malkmus will be performing under his solo guise when he returns for four shows in March.

Malkmus, the Pavement frontman who has released six albums with his band the Jicks, will perform four times in three cities: March 10 and 11 at Dunedin's Chicks Hotel, March 12 at Auckland's Studio, and March 13 in Wellington.

They'll be playing on the back of their latest album, Wig Out at Jagbags, a record released earlier this year that TimeOut said showed off Malkmus' "fun" side in a three-and-a-half star review.

He's been here twice since 2009, first with the Jicks for a Kings Arms show supported by the Verlaines; the second for a sold-out Auckland Town Hall show with his reformed 90s indie group Pavement just months later in 2010.

Of that show, TimeOut said it contained many "magic moments ... that made for one happy reunion of band and fans and oddly enduring songs".

But it's recording with the Jicks that is Malkmus' main focus now, having formed the group in 2000 - a year after Pavement first split.

The current line-up consists of Mike Clark, bassist Joanna Bolme and Jake Morris.
