Costumed fans have gathered in force in Los Angeles for the premiere of the latest movie in the Star Wars franchise, The Force Awakens.

The film, the seventh in the series, has reunited original stars including Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher.

The film is due to be shown at three venues today - the TCL Chinese Theatre, the Dolby Theatre - home of the Oscars - and the El Capitan Theatre.

Fans have gathered outside the three cinemas since last week, BBC reports.

The TCL Chinese Theatre - formerly known as Grauman's Chinese Theatre - hosted the premiere for the first Star Wars movie in 1977.
