Singer Lorde has donated $20,000 to a struggling Hutt Valley charity that feeds hungry schoolchildren.

Fuel the Need got the donation via its Givealittle page yesterday.

An apparent message from the pop star- under her real name, Ella Yelich-O'Connor - on the website reads "Good on you Manuel and Fuel the Need. Hope this helps a little bit."

The message also says she is "passionate about all kids having access to food at school".

The page had a $20,000 goal, which has been reached thanks to Lorde's donation.

Fuel the Need was started by Dalton's Gym Charitable Trust, and aims to provide lunch for 50 children a day.

Radio New Zealand reported last week that the charity had difficulty getting financial support from local businesses.
