CD Reviews: Flip Grater

New Zealand indie-folk troubadour Flip Grater follows her 2010 Tui-nominated third studio album, While I'm Awake I'm At War, with one that, arguably, is better.

Combining compositional restraint with gritty, ambient film noir textures and French-influenced lilt, Pigalle sees Grater pushing her voice high in the mix, which lifts her sometimes introspective songs beyond the melancholic.

Here she walks in a Paris twilight inhabited by ghosts and glamour (Hide and Seek), roams Americana-style deserts (Exit Sign, Hymns) and brings it home with the soaring, longing To The Devil.

  • Flip Grater. Pigalle. Maiden Records.
  • 5 stars out of 5.
