CD Reviews: Lee Fields and the Expressions

They don't call it soul music for nothing.

Lee Fields is a veteran in the field, joining the likes of Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley in a late-career revival made inevitable by the real-deal integrity and consistency of his soulful performances.

Here, his top-flight band, the Expressions, back him on his best release since 1979's Let's Talk It Over, totally in sync with Fields as he cries, growls and pleads through 11 strong tracks that take in slow funk, blues and a taste of country along the way.

Magnolia and the Dan Auerbach-penned Paralyzed are modern classics.
