Review: Troye Sivan, TRXYE (EP)

Perth singer Troye Sivan (19) presents a beat-driven brand of dark pop on debut EP TRXYE, which ranges from the minimalism and finger-snaps (oh, Lorde ... ) of Happy Little Pill and Gasoline to the lurching keyboard sweeps of Touch.

Four stars

Helped by emerging Perth production duo SLUMs and mix-masters Tom Elmhirst and Jason Cox (who have contributed to hits by Gorillaz, Adele and Empire Of The Sun), Sivan might sing of heart-to-heart encounters, but there's a slightly distracted aloofness to his approach that will likely see his songs regarded as cool necessities by some.
