Nothing 'Temporary' about album release

While the number may be considered unlucky for some, Dunedin micro-independent label Fishrider Records is issuing its 13th release this month, and it's the label's most ambitious yet.

A compilation called Temporary: Selections from Dunedin's Pop Underground 2011-2014, the album features 13 songs from 13 different Dunedin bands.

As well as being available on vinyl, CD and digitally, Temporary comes bundled with a 24-page full-colour magazine of words and images about and by the artists and others involved in the scene.

Fishrider Records, founded and operated by Ian Henderson in 2006, has been growing in stature of late, gaining a reputation among overseas interests for fine local pop music since the release of Dunedin trio Opposite Sex's debut album in 2011.

Importantly, the compilation will be Fishrider's most widely available record, being issued overseas through hip Brooklyn-based label Ba Da Bing in the US, and in the UK and Europe through Occultation Recordings.

Ba Da Bing, which counts notable indie acts such as Beirut, Sharon Van Etten, and tUnE-yArDs in its alumni, has a strong connection with New Zealand.

The label currently includes seminal Port Chalmers's trio The Dead C on its roster, as well as Michael Morley's Gate and the Renderers.

Alongside Temporary, Ba Da Bing will release Hamish Kilgour's (the Clean) debut solo album All Of It And Nothing, and a compilation of early singles from Christchurch's The Terminals in coming months.

Fishrider Records' relationship with Ba Da Bing had its beginnings when a mutual contact passed on some Fishrider albums to Ba Da Bing head Ben Goldberg at a South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas.

Later, while readying the test pressings, Henderson reached out to Goldberg with the idea of co-releasing a record.

''Whenever you do things like that you always expect that you're never ever going to get a reply,'' Henderson laughs.

''So I was very surprised when the next day I got an email back saying `This is great. This is fantastic. Let's do it'.''

As for the choice to include a magazine, Henderson cites the demise of nearly all the outlets for quality New Zealand music journalism in recent years.

''It's deliberately fighting against the demise of the tactical heart of music discovery,'' Henderson said.

''Listeners have the music, and they've also got some context to understand it in.

"With music I liked, I always wanted to know more. I always wanted to read about it.

''It's a discovery point. There's other labels, there's bandcamp, there's cassettes.''

Discover Temporary at Chick's Hotel next weekend.
