CD Reviews: Eb & Sparrow

Following three promising EPs, Wellington-based Eb & Sparrow has borrowed from cinematic Western themes, rustic folk and dreamy Americana on its debut album, weaving a many-hued tapestry that is held together by the songwriting and vocal strength of frontwoman Ebony Lamb.

Celebratory and mournful, Lamb's languid phrasing is set to delicately played textures of lap steel, pedal steel, acoustic and electric guitars, augmented by stabs of trumpet and an understated rhythmic pulse.

Although there is a slow-burning cohesion to this, occasionally one is left wishing for full cathartic release.

Yet therein lies the tension.
