CD Reviews: Tweedy

Jeff Tweedy has been well served by the drummers in his life, Wilco's inventive genius Glenn Kotche chief among them.

Here, Tweedy's 18-year-old son Spencer takes the throne, and a share of the spotlight.

His intimate knowledge of the 20 songs worked up with his dad over the past few years, coloured by mother/wife Susan Tweed's battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, is felt throughout.

The tension between youthful zest and world-weary melancholia serves folk-pop songs and open-ended musical sketches equally well, as do the backing vocals of Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of the Brooklyn band Lucius.
