CD Reviews: Dudley Benson

Dudley Benson has invited others to tweak and twist the gentle material of 2010 release Forest: songs by Hirini Melbourne, an album sung entirely in Te Reo.

Uplifting and meditative, Deforestation opens with an angular version of Pipi Manu E by US duo Matmos and follows with NZ artist Stef Animal's soaring take on Tui before bringing in beat-boxing, dub, spaced-out synthesisers and a spoken-word recital from NZ anthropologist and author Dame Anne Salmond.

The results are occasionally weird but, mostly, quietly wild.
