CD reviews: Tyson Smith

Based in Wellington since 2006, guitarist-songwriter Tyson Smith has an enviable pedigree, from jazz school in Christchurch, performing in show bands in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, and soaking up influences in Central America, Cuba and the US, to touring with singer Hollie Smith.

The Hollow Tree, which follows his 2009 debut, documents a sublime guitar technique as Smith ranges from rootsy acoustic finger-picking to flamenco flourishes and wild electric soloing.

Also in this stylistic melting pot are baritone vocals that add a cool, relaxed depth and an understanding of the value (and power) of subtlety.

•  Tyson Smith. The Hollow Tree. Hex Wobbler.

•  Three and a half stars (out of five)
