CD reviews: Fences

Seattle act Fences, aka Christopher Mansfield (yes, it's another of those band names that is, in fact, one person) has more than a few prominent fans.

Name-checked by, among others, producer Jacquire King (Kings of Leon), Mansfield fits somewhere between slacker-rock (Songs About Angels), relaxed folk (My Mountain is Cold) and, now and then, hip-hop (Macklemore guests on the angry yet exuberant Arrows).

Yet, despite a growing profile, Lesser Oceans ultimately comes across as slightly too polite, possibly because of Mansfield's attempt to straddle too many (sorry) Fences.

 Fences. Lesser Oceans. Warner Music.

Three and a half stars (out of five)
