CD reviews: The Milk Carton Kids

American indie-folk duo the Milk Carton Kids follow 2013's Grammy-nominated The Ash and Clay with a further set of sweetly sung songs sewn together with virtuosic acoustic guitar interplay.

The pair's vocal phrasing echoes the tender ballads of Simon and Garfunkel, while the close harmonies ghost the Everly Brothers, but the inventive and graceful musicianship is theirs alone and reason enough to pay attention.

Look for an upward shift in energy and you'll be left stranded in the album's syrupy nectar, perhaps pondering the difference between the beautiful and the merely pretty.
