CD review: Into the East

Into The East.
How To Turn A Blind Eye.
Self-Sown Songs.
★★★★

Spawned from an Invercargill music course more than decade ago, Into The East's Liv McBride and Graeme Woller might have recently made the tough call of disappointing, yet at least they've done it on their terms - and gone out with a document of ability and potential (sigh).

Across 13 songs, the duo use soft brushstrokes of, mainly, acoustic instrumentation and tight vocal interplay, building a warm, intimate atmosphere only to split it occasionally with darker shards or defiant shouts to the wind, all the while offering a stream of reminders about the power of sharp structures and strong lyricism.
