Alicia Vikander's 'Tomb Raider' reboot is set for release in 2018.

The forthcoming action movie, based on the popular video game franchise, is set to hit cinema screens in less than two years' time after Warner Bros recently penciled in March 16, 2018 as the scheduled drop date, according to Variety.

The film will see Vikander portray the lead Lara Croft, although a younger version, as it follows the iconic character's early life.

The 27-year-old actress' casting, which was announced in April, initially came as a surprise as 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' actress Daisy Ridley previously confirmed she had been in talks about taking on the role just one month earlier.

Ridley (24) said at the time: "There have been conversations [with the producers and bosses] but I'm waiting for someone to say 'I want you, let's do it.'"

In taking on the role of Lara - created by British gaming company Core Design in 1996 - Vikander will replace Angelina Jolie, who was widely credited for making the movie adaptation of the video game franchise a huge success when she brought the busty British explorer to life in 2001 and then again in 'Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life' in 2003.

Few other details have been revealed for the film's cast, but it's believed Roar Uthaug will direct the movie with Graham King as producer for the MGM and Warner Bros co-production.
